Do vegans get enough protein?

The short answer

Usually, yes. Surveys find that vegans who eat enough food meet protein recommendations. People with high needs, such as athletes and older adults, should plan a bit more carefully.

What does the evidence show?

The recommended intake for most adults is about 0.8 g of protein per kg of body weight per day. Dietary surveys of vegans in Europe and North America typically find average intakes above this.

Plant proteins contain all essential amino acids, though in different proportions. Eating a variety over the day, which almost everyone does, provides the full set.

Why does this happen?

Beans, lentils, tofu, tempeh, seitan, nuts, seeds and even grains all contribute protein. A normal day's food adds up.

The 'protein combining' rule from the 1970s was based on the idea that each meal must be complete. Later research showed the body maintains a pool of amino acids across the day.

Bottom line

For most people, protein is not the problem on a vegan diet. Pay attention if you are an athlete, over 65, or eating very little, and include a good protein source at most meals.

The strongest counterargument

Plant protein is lower quality, so gram for gram it does not count

Protein quality scores rate most plant proteins below animal proteins. So even if the total looks fine, vegans are effectively getting less.

What's true about it

  • Quality scores such as DIAAS do rate many single plant proteins below animal proteins, because of digestibility and amino acid balance.
  • For someone eating only one plant protein source, this could matter.

What may be misleading

  • Scores are calculated for single foods. Mixed meals, for example beans with rice, score much higher than either alone.
  • Soy, and mixed plant diets, score close to animal proteins.

What remains uncertain

  • The best way to set requirements for older adults trying to preserve muscle, where some studies suggest higher targets.
